The glossary of terms related to billing, fees, and statements. These definitions are intended to clarify items from monthly statements, such as charges, adjustments, and payment-related terminology for End-to-End businesses processing in the United States.

Billing Timeframe Matrix

How often each category of the fee is billed to you. Unless otherwise noted, all are the same occurrence as listed below and appear on the Monthly Statement.

Shift4 Processing Fees

These are credit card processing fees determined by Shift4.

Fee Name Description
Appetize Regulatory Assurance Fee Fee consists of set requirements assembled by the PCI Standards Council. Ensures all companies processing credit card information maintain a secure environment.
Appetize Semi-Annual Compliance Fee The compliance fees cover our costs for card brands and regulatory issues, as Shift4 works to secure transactions through measures like P2PE, continuous network monitoring, and updating security methodologies and systems.
Authorization fee/Auth Fee Charge per card authorization. Applies to all transactions including declined, voided, preauthorized, and keyed transactions on all pricing structures.
Back Bill Prior Month Processing fees on volume that was not assessed in the statement for the prior month.
Batch Header Fee Charged per batch or settlement by terminal ID.
Card Not Present Fee
 

 

Per transaction charge to offset the increased risk of fraud associated with card not present (CNP) transactions.

 

Dealer Support Fee A fee set by the sales partner that covers various support functions from the merchant’s sales partner. This fee cannot be adjusted by Shift4.
EMV Device Maintenance Fee Fee billed for maintenance of EMV capable processing equipment.
Enhanced Security Fee  Covers the cost of requirements set by PCI and card brands, includes tokenization and secure PCI-validated P2PE.
Gift Card Service  Monthly charge for reporting and services on gift cards.  
Incoming Chargebacks Applies for processing a chargeback.
Shift4 Dine Customer Hub Fee  Shift4's customer-facing management tool used to edit, change or review aspects of a business online.
Mid-Qualified Transaction that did not qualify at the best rate because it was entered manually or was not settled in a timely manner.
Month End Billing A monthly float fee for merchants with monthly billing.
Monthly Administration Fee  For account administration and streamlined statement e-generation. 

 
Monthly Minimum Fee

Set monthly minimum amount detailed in the Merchant Processing Agreement, applied when the total monthly processing fees do not add up to this minimum amount.

Either the difference will be applied or, if you have not processed, you will be charged the entire fee.

Monthly Premium Support & Service Fee  Fee covering a large scope of support and service-related functions including 24/7 phone-based support, local on-site technical support. 
Annual Service & Maintenance Fee The Annual Service & Maintenance Fee covers the lifetime replacement of your credit card processing devices if they malfunction or need upgrading to the latest model, including overnight shipping.
This fee is nominal for covering upfront equipment with lifetime no-cost replacements compared to purchasing equipment that may cost thousands of dollars.
The annual program fee is assessed on any account with provided credit card processing equipment (POS systems, standalone devices and PIN Pads) up to 4/devices; this fee is in addition to any applicable monthly fees.

Retrieval Request Fee billed when a customer or their issuing bank requests a copy of a sales draft in order to substantiate a transaction.
Handheld Support fee Shift4 Duo and Shift4 One monthly service and support fee.
Online Ordering and Delivery Services Enablement Fee Covers infrastructure, monitoring, and support for online odering and delivery services.

Shift4 POS & Accessory Fees

These are Point of Sale and Accessory fees determined by Shift4 and the Merchant Processing Agreement.

Dealer Support Fee
 
A fee set by the sales partner that covers various support functions from the merchant’s sales partner. This fee cannot be adjusted by Shift4.
Inactivity Fee applied to all “software-as-a-service” billing models per device for every 30 days you do not actively process credit card payments.
Monthly Premium Support & Service Fee  Fee covering a large scope of support and service-related functions including 24/7 phone-based support, local on-site technical support. 
POS Accessory Fee for accessories outside of the POS bundle you requested.
Workforce Management Fee
 
Workforce Management is a scheduling and employee management tool for Shift4 Dine POS Software. This service can be cancelled via Shift4 Dine Customer Hub after initial onboarding. Users will receive a free 60-day trial period, after which they will be automatically enrolled unless they cancel the service.
POS Monthly Fee for the POS system, which covers reporting, maintenance, support, and swaps. Charged per POS and based on tier.
Wireless Data Wireless data plan used by Shift4 Dine, and Shift4 Dine Data Usage Fee.
POS Software POS software only fee charged to businesses using Focus POS.
Lane SaaS Fee USB credit card device fee that is charged per device.
Non-Shift4 Fees (Pass Through Fees)

These are fees determined by Non-Shift4 parties, such as Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and financial institutions. Shift4 does not keep this money; the funds are paid by you and “Pass Through” Shift4 directly to the 3rd party. These fees are non-negotiable and cannot be reduced or changed.

Bank Sponsorship Fee  Billed directly from Shift4’s sponsoring bank for total volume processed.
Debit Enablement Quarterly Billed to Shift4 by Debit Networks (ACCEL, CULIANCE, NYCE, PULSE, & STAR)  for enabling their debit networks for you to accept debit transactions.
Interchange Fee Fees paid by the acquirer to the issuer to compensate for transaction-related costs. MasterCard and Visa establish interchange fee rates. Fee is based on credit card regulations and the capture of appropriate data, including card swipe, address, and electronic signature, as needed.
Network Transaction Fee Covers the costs of ensuring credit card transactions are secure and up to date on card brand network data requirements.
Chargeback Arbitration Fee Chargeback Arbitration fees include fees for examination and settlement of a dispute. This fee is payable to cover the card brands costs of organization and conduct Arbitral proceedings (investigation of the dispute).  
Reversal Reversal fee is charged when you respond to a chargeback case thus creating a reversal.
VISA Processing Fees

If your business accepts cards with the VISA logo, all fees may apply. Prices are dictated by Visa, NOT Shift4.

Credit Assessment (VS ASSMNT CREDIT) Applies to all Visa credit transactions. Also called Visa US Acquirer Service Fee – Credit. 
Debit Assessment (VS ASSMNT DEBIT) Applies to all Visa debit transactions. Also called Visa US Acquirer Service Fee – Debit. 
Fixed Acquirer Network Fee Card Not Present (FANF CNP) FANF is a monthly fee that varies based on the processing method, number of locations, and volume.
Fixed Acquirer Network Fee Card Present (FANF CP) FANF is a monthly fee that varies based on the processing method, number of locations, and volume.
International Acquirer Fee (IAF) Applies to transactions in the United States with credit cards issued by banks outside the United States.
Misuse of Authorization Fee Applies to Visa authorizations that are not followed by a matching clearing transaction (or in the case of a canceled or timed-out authorization, not properly reversed).
NAPF Credit Applies to Visa authorization requests that are neither consumer debit nor prepaid.
NAPF Debit Applies to Visa authorization requests that are card type of consumer debit or prepaid.
NAPF INTL Credit Applies to International Visa authorization requests that are neither consumer debit nor prepaid.
NAPF INTL Debit Applies to International Visa authorization requests that are card type of consumer debit or prepaid.
System File Transmission Fee (VS VS TRANSMFEE) Applies to all Visa transactions and is charged in addition to other transaction-based assessments, such as the Acquirer Processing Fee. Also called Visa Base II System File Transmission Fee. 
Transaction Integrity Fee (TIF) Applies to transactions involving Visa non-PIN debit and prepaid cards that do not meet CPS requirements. Also called Visa Debit Integrity Fee. 
Visa CA AVS Applies each time merchants access the address verification service in Canada when processing a transaction.
Visa US AVS Applies each time merchants access the address verification service in the United States when processing a transaction.
VS High Fallback Applies to a card-present environment involving contact chip cards at chip-capable terminals; however, chip technology is not used to capture the card data.
VS MC Swch Fee Fee applicable to all U.S. domestic U.S. Visa cash transactions.
VS POS EM91 Tran As of June 1, 2023, a $0.10 per transaction fee for MSD contactless transactions processed through Visa will be billed. Prior to EMV, many credit cards supported contactless processing (AKA ‘Tap and Pay’) via the NFC chip on cards by which magstripe data was sent to the terminal. After the advent of EMV, which is a more secure protocol, the card brands announced that you should discontinue the support of MSD contactless processing and update POS systems and terminal devices to support the more secure EMV contactless transactions. To further enforce this requirement, the card brands are now levying additional fees on transactions processed via MSD contactless.
VS RAF Exc CB As of April 16, 2021, no more than 15 continuous reattempts to reauthorize a transaction are allowed within a 30-day period. Any further attempts are defined as excessive reattempts. An Excessive Reattempt fee will apply in April 2021. An additional $0.05 per transaction will apply for cross-border transactions and show on statements as "VS RAF Excessive Reattempts Cross-Border."
VS RAF Exc Dom As of April 16, 2021, no more than 15 continuous reattempts to reauthorize a transaction are allowed within a 30-day period. Any further attempts are defined as excessive reattempts. An Excessive Reattempt fee will apply in April 2021. The $0.10 charge per re-attempts over 15 will display on your statement with a "VS RAF Excessive Reattempts Domestic*" description.
VS RAF NvApr CB Over 15 authorization re-attempts within a 30-day period on International Cards in addition to the domestic rate not billed.
VS RAF NvApr Dom Over 15 authorization re-attempts within a 30-day period on Domestic Cards not billed.
VS-CRVCHFEEINTLCR Applies to all international credit or refund items that are not processed with a consumer debit or prepaid card.

VS-US ISABASECASH International Service Assessment fee applies to domestic transactions made with a foreign bank card.
VS-US ISABASEPUR International Service Assessment (ISA) fee is a processing fee charged by Visa to merchants whenever a customer chooses to use a credit or debit card issued by a bank outside of the United States. 
VSCRVCHRFEECR Applies to all credit or refund items that are not processed with a consumer debit or prepaid card.

Zero Floor Limit Fee Applies to cleared transactions that can’t be matched to a previously approved or partially-approved authorization.
MasterCard Processing Fees

If your business accepts cards with the MasterCard logo, all fees may apply. Prices are dictated by MasterCard, NOT Shift4.

Acquirer Brand Volume Applies to Mastercard debit sale transactions greater than $1,000.
Acquirer Brand Volume (MC ACQ BRAND VOL ABV) Applies to Mastercard credit sale transactions greater than $1,000.
Acquirer Brand Volume (MC ACQ BRAND VOLUME) Applies to Mastercard transactions less than or equal to $1,000.
Acquirer License Fee (MC MC ACQ LICN FEE) Assessed on a business’s gross MasterCard processing volume and varies per acquirer based on MasterCard’s assessed charge as it’s distributed across the acquirer’s portfolio of merchants. Also called License Volume Fee.
Address Verification Fee – Card-Present (AVS CardPresent) Applies each time merchants access the address verification service when processing a transaction.
Cross Border Fee (CRBDR - Domestic) Applies to transactions where the merchant’s home country is different than the country where the card was used. May be combined with the Global Acquirer Program Support Fee.
Digital Enablement Fee (MC DIGITAL ENBLMT) Applies to all Mastercard card-not-present sale transactions.
Global Acquirer Program Support Fee Applies to transactions for U.S. businesses by cards issued outside the U.S. May be combined with the Cross Border Fee.
Global Wholesale program-Travel B2B Applies for processing Virtual Business cards.
MC Acquirer Program Support (MC-ACQ Prgm Support) Applies to transactions acquired in the US and settled in US dollars but paid for with a Mastercard that was issued in a country other than the US.
MC IC DG Fee Fee applicable per each downgraded (reclassified) transaction.
MC Integrity Fee Applies to transactions involving MC non-PIN debit and prepaid cards that do not meet CPS requirements.
MC Kilobyte Fee Applies to all MasterCard transaction authorization attempts.
MC Per Location Fee MasterCard per Merchant Location Fee.
MC-MC ASIS INTER Fee applicable per each $0 Account Status Inquiry performed on a card issued in the same country as your location.
MC-MC ASIS INTRA Fee applicable per each $0 Account Status Inquiry performed on a card not issued in the same country as your location.
MC-MC Sfe Nit Aq Fee Fee assessed per each authorization. This is a mandated service that allows Mastercard and the Acquirer to take immediate action to mitigate fraudulent behavior.
Network Access Brand Usage Fee (MC NABU AUTH & MC NABU RETURNS) Applies to each authorization record for U.S. businesses or U.S. cardholders.
Discover Processing Fees

If your business accepts cards with the Discover logo, all fees may apply. Prices are dictated by Discover, NOT Shift4.

These fees are visible in the Other Detail of the statement.

Discover Account Verification Fee Applies when a business verifies a cardholder's information without charging the card – Zero Dollar Verification Messages.
Discover Assessment Fee Applies to gross Discover card transaction volume.
Discover AVS Discover charges a fee each time you access the address verification service when processing a transaction.
Discover Data Usage Fee Applies to all U.S.-based authorization transactions.
Discover Digital Invt Fee Applies to all key entered card present and card not present sales.
International Processing Fee Applies to U.S.-acquired transactions paid for with a card issued outside of the U.S.
International Service Fee Applies under the same circumstances as the International Processing Fee noted above.
Network Authorization Fee Applies to all Discover network authorizations and will replace the previously assessed Data Transmission Fee, which applied only to settled Discover transactions. 
American Express (AMEX) Processing Fees

If your business accepts cards with the American Express logo, all fees may apply. Prices are dictated by AMEX, NOT Shift4.

These fees are visible in the Other Detail section of the statement.

AM US Assessment Fee

Amex Acquiring Transaction Fee Fee assessed to all businesses for authorization, reporting, and settlement of AMEX transactions.
Card-Not-Present (CNP) Surcharge (AM NON SWIPED TR) Applies to gross card-not-present volume, such as keyed and e-commerce transactions. The CNP surcharge is charged in addition to the sponsorship fee.
International Assessment Applies to gross sales volume involving a card issued outside of the United States.
