Configure and Use KDS/ VDU Features in POSitouch

Overview

The POSitouch Kitchen Video Display (KDS/VDU) is a color computer driven by the same video drivers used by POSitouch terminals. The screen may have a touch-sensitive overlay, or it may be controlled by a Bump Bar. If the screen has a touch sensor, orders can be bumped by touching the display directly.

Set Up the KDS/VDU as a Prep Printer

The KDS/VDU is first set up like a prep printer.

1. Go to Backoffice Setup > Hardware > Prep Printers > Locations and Types.
2. Set the Kitchen Video's Printer Type to 15 – Video Display.

Configure Kitchen Video Setup

1. Go to Backoffice Setup > Hardware > Kitchen Videos.
2. In the Video Type field, select one of the following:
   • Logic Controls Satellite
   • PC

3. In the Bump Format field, select one of the following:
   • 2 – On Screen for a touch screen KDS/VDU.
   • 3 – Bump Bar for a Logic Controls Satellite KDS/VDU.
   • 6 – Bump Bar for a PC KDS/VDU.
4. In the Expo Printer field, select a printer to print bump chits from this KDS/VDU.
5. In the Alternate VDU Format field, select a format if you want the ability to change the format of this KDS/VDU using the Mode button, either on screen or on the Bump Bar.

Note: You can set up extra KDS/VDUs that do not have a physical display and use alternate KDS/VDU formats to scroll through orders as the mode changes.

6. In the Master VDU fields, select up to two KDS/VDUs to act as master bumpers for this KDS/VDU.
7. In the Bump to VDU field, select a KDS/VDU to move an order to by touching the bump key.

Use the VDU Format dropdown to select the display format.

Use Variable Format Bumping

With variable format, you can bump a single item or an entire order.

If using a Bump Bar, the number keys 1 through 6 act as jump functions and move to the corresponding column. For example, pressing 2 moves to the first order in the second column. Pressing 2 again jumps to each subsequent order in that column.

Once you reach the order you want to bump:

• Select the bump key while the order header is highlighted to bump the entire order.
• If using the Variable format – bump items? setting and you only want to bump certain items, use the 8 key to move down within the order and the 9 key to move back up, then select the bump key on the desired item.

Enable Bumping Individual Items

Understand Unbumping from the Master Bumper

Unbumping from the master bumper will unbump an item from a prep station only if that item has not already been bumped by the prep station. If the item has already been bumped by the prep station, the master bump's unbump action will not affect the prep station, to ensure the order does not get prepared again.

Start a New Window for Each Course

The Each course is a new window? flag setting creates a new window — or, if using variable format, a new header — for each course when the entire order is sent to prep at once. This is useful when a server takes a customer's entire order and sends it to the kitchen at the same time.

Note: For this setting to work, you must also turn on Page Break in Prep Sequence Names and Show course breaks on VDU in Menu Screens > Prep Printouts > Options 2.

1. Go to Backoffice Setup > Hardware > Kitchen Videos.
2. Select Each course is a new window? to turn it on.

3. Go to Menu Screens > Prep Sequence Names.
4. Select Page Break for the relevant sequence.

5. Go to Menu Screens > Prep Printouts > Options 2.
6. Select Show course breaks on VDU? to turn it on.

Show Strikethrough for Bumped Items

The Strikethrough for bumped items? flag setting displays bumped items with an asterisk, an underline, and a strikethrough line, and changes the item's font to lowercase.

1. Go to Backoffice Setup > Hardware > Kitchen Videos.
2. Select Strikethrough for bumped items? to turn it on.

Show Item Summary, Bump Times, Open Checks, or Service Times

Note: Enabling any of these settings uses one additional window per selection.

1. Go to Backoffice Setup > Hardware > Kitchen Videos.
2. Select Item Summary?, VDU bump times?, Open Checks?, or Service Times? as needed.

Customize VDU Headers

1. Go to Restaurant Misc Data > Order Screens > Fast Food 2.
2. Select Customize VDU window heading? and choose the fields to display (Menu, Zone, # Party, Table #, Terminal #, or Check Number).
3. Select Customize VDU by item heading? and choose the fields to display.

Use Expedite

A Cell Type 17 item added to an order at the time of send, or added after the order has already been sent, causes that order to change color and jump to the front of the queue. You can also configure this to only change color without jumping to the front.

Expedite by Prep Sequence

In addition to a general Cell Type 17 (one without a prep sequence group assigned), you can expedite by prep sequence. For example, if a server sends an appetizer, salad, and entrée, and the system is set to Each course is a new window?, or the server has manually sent sequences at different times, you can send an expedite item with its own prep sequence setting so the system only expedites items in that sequence group.

As with the general expedite setting, a Cell Type 17 item assigned to a prep sequence can either change color and jump to the front of the queue, or only change color.

1. Go to Restaurant Misc Data > Table and KDS/VDU Status.
2. Select Expo order complete sets expedite color? and, if desired, and jumps to front of queue?.
3. Select Expedite – Cell 17 highlights only? if the item should only change color.

Control Auto Send with VDU Bump

The Auto send prep seq groups w/VDU bump? setting includes an option to prevent the next sequence from auto-sending until the previous sequence has been bumped from all KDS/VDUs.

1. Go to Menu Screens > Prep Printouts > Options 2.
2. Select Auto send prep seq groups w/VDU bump? to turn it on.
3. Select of All VDU's? to require the previous sequence to be bumped from all KDS/VDUs before the next sequence auto-sends.

Note: If of All VDU's? is not selected, the next sequence auto-sends as soon as the previous sequence is bumped from any single KDS/VDU, even if it has not been bumped from the others.

Show Modifiers on the Summary Screen

View the Present Time on the KDS/VDU

The present time displays in the title line of the KDS/VDU screen.
