Schedule a Future Order on Handheld
Description: Learn how to schedule a Future Order using a Handheld device.
Note: This feature is currently available only for Pilot users using Multi-Location Management (Customer Hub). Support for single-location merchants is planned for a future release.
Handheld devices can schedule Future Orders but cannot manage them once created. To edit a scheduled order, collect additional payment, fire an order early, or cancel, void, or refund a Future Order, use the Workstation.
Before You Begin
Before scheduling a Future Order, verify that:
- Future Orders are enabled for your location.
- Your user account has the Manage Future Orders permission.
For setup instructions, visit the Configure Future Orders article.
Step 1: Start a New Order
On the Handheld, start a new order as you normally would.
Step 2: Set the Scheduled Fulfillment Time
Enter the date and time the order should be ready for pickup or fulfillment.
Your location determines the available dates and times:
- Minimum Advance Notice
- Maximum Scheduling Window
Step 3: Enter a Prep Lead Time (If Enabled)
If "Use Prep Lead Time" from POS is enabled for your location, enter the prep lead time for the order. The entered value overrides the location's default prep lead time for this order only.
Note: If this feature is not enabled, this step does not appear.
Step 4: Collect Payment
Collect payment based on your location's configured payment rules.
Depending on your location's configuration, the order may be:
- Unpaid
- Deposit required
- Paid in Full
Payments are processed the same way as standard POS transactions, including:
- In-person payment
- Manual card entry for phone orders
Payment links and emailed invoices are not supported in the current release.
What Happens Next
After the Future Order is scheduled, it appears in the "Scheduled Orders" view on the Workstation.
At the calculated Fire Time, Shift4 Dine automatically sends the order to the kitchen. No additional staff action is required.
To edit the order, collect additional payment, fire it early, or cancel, void, or refund it before fulfillment, visit the Schedule and Manage Future Orders on Workstation article.
