Tablet FAQs
Can we use the SIM card slot in the Tablet?
The Tablet is not supported on cellular for merchant use. Internal testing shows the app rejects non-provisioned/personal SIMs and can close or behave unexpectedly when such SIMs are inserted. For merchant cellular connectivity, use Shift4 Duo or a supported mobile modem/eSIM solution. For questions about modem/eSIM options or eligibility, consult the Mobile team.
What wireless router will be used with Tablet deployments?
Historically, we shipped TP-Link Archer hardware. Current deployments and bundles commonly include TP-Link Omada / SafeStream routers (for example, TL-R605 or ER605) and Omada access points; some bundles may still reference Archer models. Always check the Hardware Bundle / Deployment checklist for the exact model shipped for a given installation.
Can the Tablet print to USB printers?
Yes, Tablet supports USB receipt printers, but USB printing is conditional on the printer model and correct configuration. Field experience shows edge cases when multiple Tablet/Handheld devices or shared printers are present, so follow the Printer Setup guidance for model-specific steps, recommended topology, and testing procedures (use test records or dummy devices where advised).
Do the “tableside” or employee printer settings on Shift4 Dine affect Tablet printing?
Yes, they can. Employee/tableside printer assignments may affect where a Tablet sends receipts and, in some setups, may be used to route prints to a USB printer. Verify employee tableside assignments and printer groups when troubleshooting or configuring printing to avoid routing conflicts.
How does the Tablet print to a network printer?
For networked (Ethernet or Wi-Fi) printers, the Tablet must be on the same local network (LAN) as the POS and the printer for print routing to work. That same LAN requirement remains in place for network printing. USB printing and employee/tableside assignments are separate behaviors that provide additional routing options.
Can a Tablet print to different receipt printers depending on where the server is working?
Yes, in certain configurations. By default, the Tablet prints to the printer assigned to the terminal. However, combining USB printers with employee/tableside assignments can allow prints to be routed to different devices depending on site configuration. Visit the Printer Setup article for examples and recommended configurations.
Can the Tablet change screen orientation (portrait/landscape)?
No. The Tablet application does not provide a supported user setting to permanently switch between portrait and landscape. If a device is unexpectedly changing orientation, follow standard device troubleshooting (check auto-rotate, reboot, verify Android display settings) and escalate to Support if the issue persists or if a merchant requests a permanent orientation change.
Will the Tablet be shipped without a case?
No. Every Tablet should include a matching MSR case. If a shipment or deployment is missing the case, Deployments/Support will add or arrange the case during the order or swap process.
Can Shift4 Duo devices be used as a modem with a virtual eSIM?
Yes, this capability is available as a pilot at select locations. Treat this as a pilot; Deployment or Sales should confirm availability and eligibility for a given site.
